Gallbladder surgery. The bread and butter of the general surgeon (I work for six of them.) A laproscopic gallbladder removal is a quick, efficient procedure in the right hands. But many surgeons fail to prepare their patients for the intial after effects. A laproscopic procedure requires the introduction of gas into the patient’s body, and the side effect is gas pain. In the course of my professional life I have spoken with many a post op gallbladder patient experiencing terrible gas pain. The answer is to walk, move, and if all else fails, consider a gas reducer such as Gas-X. Gallbladder disease is often unrecognized. People are happy to relate their symptoms to heartburn and leave it at that. But it is a serious condition.
On a lighter note, do you know that there exists what surgeons call “gallbladder season”? The excessive food consumption of the Thanksgiving/ Christmas season results in a noticeable increase in in the cases of cholecystitus countrywide.
