Today’s medicinal herbs come in many forms. We consume them as spices or flavorings within our meals or sip them as a relaxing cup of tea. They are in ointments or essential oil products that we use and can be found locked deep within the aromatherapy and perfumed products that we use. We generally think of the word Herb to describe a plant used for medicinal purposes but because our use of herbs today is so common, a lot of individuals are actually unaware, that they are using herbs to improve their health.

Unless they are purchasing and using the bottled variety, a lot of individuals are actually unaware of the many herbs that they use throughout their general day to day living. Someone who just may like the taste of caraway may not realize that they are actually reducing their flatulence by eating it on a regular basis.

From the green tea, ginger and marjoram that we use as an alternative treatment to relieve the pain and inflammation of arthritis, to the garlic we eat to reduce our incidence of the cold and flu, whether we take them intentionally or unintentionally a wide variety of herbs are available to us.

Although it would be nice to include a complete listing of the many herbs and their health benefits in this article, there are just far too many, and it would require the writing of a book. Looking at the few that I have included you may find yourself spotting a spice or herb that you use to flavor your dishes with, and which you had no idea, was also being used by yourself and your family to relieve symptoms that you might have otherwise suffered from.

A few of the basic herbs we use in our day to day living:

Basil: It relieves depression, migraines / headaches, and is beneficial in improving concentration levels.

Bergamot: Aids in the functioning of the digestive and urinary tract. Acts as an insect repellent and is beneficial in the relief of cold sores.

Caraway is used to control flatulence.

Chamomile: Aids in the relief of acne, blisters, eczema, psoriasis, depression, headache, nervous tension, gout, flatulence, indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome. Chamomile should not be taken by pregnant women as it can bring on uterine contractions.

Cloves: Generally used as an oil, it is an antiseptic used to relieve symptoms of the common cold, toothache and mouth sores.

Dandelion: Stimulates the liver and gall bladder. It is also a diuretic and a mild laxative.

Dill: It is used to relieve symptoms of colic and flatulence
