The gallbladder must not be essential for living a full life, because the older I get the more of my friends seem to be living without theirs. So what is the gallbladder? The gallbladder is a collection center that accumulates bile fluid as it drains from the liver. This bile helps with the digestion and in particular the digestion of fats. Also found in the bile are the byproducts from the breakdown of red blood cells, bilirubin and cholesterol.
Gallstones are made up of cholesterol or bilirubin that cluster. They crystallize and become stones. In most cases these are benign and cause no problems. Problems start to occur when the stones block the outlet. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, belching, gas and severe pain.
So what can we do to avoid all this pain and eventually the removal of the gallbladder?
Women can pay special attention of their hormones. The ratio of progesterone to estradiol changes during menopause or with some kinds of hormone therapies. This caused the gallbladder to slow down and bile stagnates. So discuss this with your doctor and make the proper changes before this becomes a problem.
Control your fat intake. Too little fat can encourage the formation of gallstones. If you already have gallstones too much fast can cause an attack. The number you are shooting for is around 30% of your daily calories coming from good fats.
Some vitamins have been shown to reduce the levels of cholesterol in the bile. This would help retard the formation of stones. Eat foods rich in vitamin C and E. It wouldn’t hurt to supplement in addition to healthy eating.
The next thing you see, you have seen hundreds of times for a cure for almost anything that ails you. It’s true. Exercise makes a huge difference in your health and with gallstones as well. Increase your activity level today. A minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity should be in your daily life style.
Take good care of your body and it will take care of you.
