Pain is one of those things that everyone experiences, and is arguably one of those factors that anyone can relate to. Such a common experience would, naturally, spawn numerous remedies and treatments. This is regardless of what cultural, geographical, and temporal factors might be present to change things. So it should come as no surprise that alternative systems of medicine also have pain relief medications or treatments. The ancient Chinese, who have a medical system that drastically differs from that of Western medicine, have one, and it functions in a surprisingly similar manner to modern medicine’s own creations.

Traditional Chinese pain relief treatment is an interesting thing, known as Yan Hu Suo Zhi Tong Pian in Chinese. The Chinese system believes in the body having a flow of qi in it a form of energy that is generated by the body. When the qi and blood flow both stagnate, it is believed to cause pain. Other possible sources of pain include menstrual pains, abdominal cramps, and injuries. The concept of Chinese pain relief relies on being able to release the blocked qi and blood, allowing for a restoration of the natural flow of things. This restoration results in a cessation of the symptoms.

The formula, like most Chinese remedies, can vary greatly from one patient to another. However, there are two common forms of this treatment: a herbal extract and a pharmaceutical extract. The pharmaceutical product, Yan Hu Su, is lacking in an ingredient that the herbal one, Yan Hu Suo, has: Angelica root. Also, the pharmaceutical version is much stronger, and is essentially a pain relief drug in itself. Both forms have seen use as treatments for menstrual discomfort, but have also been recommended for treating gallbladder problems, angina, injuries, and muscle spasms. Some have also used the drowsiness caused by the pharmaceutical form as a sleeping aid.
