We all need nutrients in our daily diet for good health. Some people take additional vitamins and minerals to supplement their diet. However some may be toxic to your health.
Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluable and are stored in the body. When these vitamins are taken in high doses, they can be toxic.
Vitamin A: Hypervitaminosis A refers to high levels of vitamin A stored in the body. It can cause birth defects, liver abnormalities, disorders of the central nervous system and reduce bone density. Symptoms of vitamin A toxicity are nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness and blurred vision.
Vitamin D: High doses of vitamin D can lead to high blood calcium levels in the body, which can cause calcium deposits in the kidneys and arteries. It can also cause birth defects. The symptoms of vitamin D toxicity are nausea, vomiting, joint pain and loss of appetite.
Vitamin E: Excessive doses of vitamin A may interfere with the absorption of some vitamins. This may result in vitamin deficiencies of vitamins A, K and D. Symptoms include headaches, fatigue, double vision, and diarrhea.
Vitamin K: Prolonged high doses of vitamin K reduces the level of red blood cells in the body, resulting in anemia.
Vitamins c: Excessive amounts of vitamin C can be toxic to those who have a tendency to form kidney stones or gallbladder stones.
Zinc: Large doses of zinc can reduce iron and copper absorption. The symptoms of zinc toxicity are vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness and high blood cholesterol levels.
Calcium: Too much calcium may lead to calcium deposits in soft tissue, such as the heart and kidneys. It can also reduce absorption of iron and zinc.
Iron: Excessive amounts of iron can cause gastrointestinal problems, nausea and black stools.
